Album View: Electric Ray and The Shockers "California Torpedo"

Another interesting rockers are ready to embark into the world music realm and introducing their exciting, yet intriguing rock music for every one. The intriguing Austrian based band are called Electric Ray and The Shockers which in late 2016 (December 23) have released their debut album entitled “California Torpedo”, a record that could very well entertained those who are fans of punk, surf along with psychedelic rock genre. Electric Ray along with his band mates somehow were able to combine those musical element into one entity, crafting that unique sound that is somewhat raw but technically significant at the same time.

Straight from the get go, Electric Ray and The Schokers, immediately brought that enchanting, unique atmosphere with that psychedelic feel from their first track 'Long Valley Dance'. A haunting sound, which suddenly turned into an exciting surf rock element and even alternative feel, certainly offer something interesting for the ear. 'Trouble' starts off with a more surf rock approach, but continue adding that psychedelic atmosphere as the song progress added with unique scratching guitar sound, providing a rather mysterious track. Another somewhat odd and can be considered creepy atmosphere is offered from 'Dead', that can put listener into that 'twilight zone' kind of realm while listening to it.

'Memory Hunter' has slightly more melodic feel with a slower tempo, acoustic guitar play and somewhat deep, meaningful vocals from Ray. A fun surf/alternative rock approach can be heard from 'Wake Up' which has that bit of bright kind of nuance compared to previous tracks. 'Tempt Me' brings back that mysterious kind of atmosphere, but it has a quite relaxing attitude with the rather funny lyrics and unique vocals. The album's title track, is also an interesting piece to check out with it's fun melody bu with haunting music, notably with the guitar riffs. 'Night Is a Woman' brings that deep, dark, mysterious atmosphere again, giving out strong psychedelic/alternative rock element especially during the verse part. 'You Make Time Fade to a Laugh' ended the record with a pretty comforting atmosphere without losing that psych/surf/alternative combo, providing an interesting and quite enjoyable tune.

Being formed by the combination of Electric Ray's vocals along with the musical play from Manuel Mitterhuber (guitar), Mario Stadler (bass) and Christoph Stadler (drums), this band certainly offer an interesting musical approach with “California Torpedo”. Such intriguing musical journey with dark, mysterious yet fun atmosphere being blend into one, brings out an emotional roller coaster ride that might not always suit everyone, but somehow has that interesting factor that can get music lovers attracted. Overall, it's certainly an album that psychedelic, alternative or surf rock enthusiast should be keen on listening, but some tracks can certainly invite fans from other genre to learn about their music as well. Hopefully, there will be more interesting and intriguing music to come from this talented musician in the coming future.
